Perspective

*Every year more resources are released, research studies are performed and new information is provided.  As a Speech Language Pathologist, it is important to do your own research and use your clinical judgment.

*Keep in mind, a resource or therapy tool that may work for one client may not be as effective for another client and that is "ok."
*Parents research and find information that they want to incorporate in their child's therapy session and although it may not be an approach we would typically utilize, we can still be receptive to new ideas.
*We all have different perspectives and it is important to have our own perspectives as well as respecting others viewpoints.

Positive Reinforcement in Therapy Sessions

1/26/2012

I love seeing each of my students' faces light up when they are provided with positive reinforcement.  Their smiles are priceless and it really makes them try even harder. Think back to parents, teachers, mentors and other individuals in our lives that made us smile on those bad days through encouraging words or even a simple "Wow, you did it!".  Therefore, I think it is so important for us to continue to incorporate positive reinforcement into our sessions and life in general.  If we can find something positive to say first and then incorporate what we want our student and/or client to work on next time, then I think each individual is more receptive to what the clinician says.  Positive reinforcement can be modified for all ages.  Below are some of the themes  that I have used throughout some of my sessions:

The above picture are underwater creatures and for this session, the theme was "Swimming to Success."  They loved earning an underwater creature and naming them whenever they got to pick one.  The underwater creatures stay in the Speech room, but during their session they have a chance to earn them.  Whenever they earn a creature I provide them with some sort of feedback so they know what they did right, as well as what they can improve on.

The students love to see
"What is in the Bag" whenever they do their good work in Speech.  At the end of the week they get to pick something out of the bag after their therapy session.  It could be a sticker, pencil, eraser, etc.  I think they really like the surprise of picking something out of the bag and they look forward to it.

A Different Perspective Sometimes Can Make a Difference

I must admit today was a pretty hectic day!  I think that is what made me even more inclined to write this post.  My day was chaotic, nothing went as planned, I felt overwhelmed, paperwork continues to pile up, and many schedule changes.  In the midst of all of the above and other things not stated, I still felt like I had an amazing day!

My day was amazing because....a student on my caseload learned a new skill, all of the students that come to Speech Therapy always look forward to their sessions and are excited and eager to learn, and the most important point is.... I chose a major that I am so passionate about that I am open to when nothing goes as planned, when I feel overwhelmed, when paperwork continues to pile up and when there are schedule changes.

We may not be able to change the circumstances of a situation, but we can change our perspective!...Every day I start my day and choose to have an optimistic outlook on life, seeking the lessons in the hectic days, finding peace in chaos and enjoying a career that fills my life with so much joy!

Choosing to major in the field of Speech Language Pathology has become so much more than my career, but it has shaped my life in ways unimaginable.  The tools that Speech Language Pathology provided for me throughout my years of schooling and the start of my career have become the foundation of my life.

I came home, drank a cup of green tea, looked up new quotes for the day and I am excited for what tomorrow has in store.

"You control your future, your destiny. What you think about comes about. By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands - your own."-Mark Victor Hansen-
