I found out about being a SLP from the therapist at my school. I actually interviewed her for my research paper on choosing a career.

I found out about SLP from a University course I was taking and after learning about it I went home and I researched it all night long until I was sure this was the career I wanted to get into!

I discovered speech language pathology during grade school. Growing up with my sister who is non-verbal sent me on a search for answers. I wanted to know what was prohibiting her from speaking and what it was that I could do to help her communicate. It is in my search for answers that I found the field of speech language pathology!

I found out about speech therapy when I was applying for university. I've always had a desire to work in health care and I considered nursing but it didn't seem right for me. I had heard of speech and language therapy in the past as my nana has Alzheimer's and a close friend has autism who had received speech therapy. After researching the course I knew it was perfect for me. I could make a difference to peoples lives and at the same time make great use of my communication and English language skills. I have loved every minute of it since!

I discovered the field of Speech Pathology in a very unexpected, yet interesting way. I already made up my mind to major in Journalism because I love to write, but my parents worried about the possibility of me not obtaining a job after college. That's when the search began. I received a scholarship to go to college in December of 2012 and then decided to look at the different majors my school had to offer. There it was. Communicative Sciences and Disorder (also known as Speech Language Pathology). I googled it to gain more information and loved the idea of helping people. Granted, there is so much information to learn, however this is exactly where I'm suppose to be. Our field is soooo important and I wouldn't trade it for any other.

I always knew I wanted to work with individuals to better their lives. I constantly contemplated becoming a teacher but knew that wasn't the best choice for me. I interviewed a school SLP for a high school career paper. She impacted my view on being an SLP and the benefits of the profession. During this process she has been a great support system. I can't wait to see what my future holds and the impacts I can make on others!
