- It would also be beneficial to look at the curriculum's of the colleges that you are interested in applying to.
- If you are going to switch majors and you do not want to feel too behind, the best time to switch would be before you go into your sophomore year or at the latest second semester sophomore year. Of course if you end up going through in a different major and reach your senior year and decide you want to major in speech language pathology, there are post-baccalaureate programs for individuals who majored in a field other than speech language pathology during undergrad.
- Work hard to get a good GPA in undergrad, especially since you have to go to graduate schools and many graduate schools are very competitive to apply to (minimum GPA of 3.5 for some).
- Shoot for an A, minimum B in classes, it is also beneficial to retake classes in the summer or when you have time if you get below a B in a class.
- Be sure to keep up with all of your assignments and read, if you do not read now you will have to read double later.
- Keep all of your books from undergrad that you buy related to the field of speech language pathology, add them to your library, try not to sell any if you can help it, because some of the books you will use in graduate school and in your career.
- You have to accumulate observation hours (I think a minimum of 25) in undergrad, they must be completed with an ASHA certified speech language pathologist or audiologist. There will be a specific sheet that your program will give you to keep track of your hours, be sure to keep up with them and make copies.
- Start compiling information to apply for graduate school at the end of your junior year because it becomes overwhelming if you wait until the last minute. Most graduate school programs require you to submit your scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Be sure that the graduate schools that you are applying to are accredited, you can check ASHA's website for that information.
