Tips for High School Years
Observe Before Choosing a Major
- Learn to read, summarize and outline reading assignments. It is important to learn how to perform these three skills because these skills will carryover into college and throughout your career. Really take the time to understand the content that you are reading.
- Time management skills are important, so why not start now to find the best system that works for you. I used a calendar to outline all my assignments and daily tasks, but you may have a better system that works for you.
- Try to get involved in the community by volunteering, participate in community service projects, join a club, or any other extracurricular activities to add to your resume.

Observe Before Choosing a Major
- Before choosing any major be sure to observe so that you can get a feel of what it is like to work in that particular field.
- I think the best part about this field is there is something for everyone! You should not get bored because there are so many opportunities to grow, learn, and collaborate in the variety of different settings.
- Do not be afraid to call up a facility and ask if you can observe a speech language pathologist, more than likely they are more than happy to have you come in. Be sure to state your name, why you are calling (ex. because you are interested in the field of speech language pathology and wanted to observe what a typical day would be like), and always send a thank you email or letter in the mail if they allow you to observe/shadow them. Sometimes you may have to fill out paperwork or any other documents they need from you but, they would provide you with all of that information.
- Since Speech Language Pathology is such a broad field, try to set aside time to observe in a few different settings of choice: Hospitals, Rehabilitation Centers, Public & Private Schools, Private Practice Offices, Skilled Nursing Facility, Home Health Agencies (Home Care), Research Laboratories, Long-Term Care Facilities, Community Clinics, Colleges & Universities, State and Local Health Departments, State and Federal Government Agencies, and Centers for Persons with Developmental Disabilities.
- In all of the settings listed above a plan of care will be established, collaboration with other professionals and families, educating staff, family members, patient, community, providing in-service training, identifying client's strengths and weaknesses, diagnosing, evaluating, carrying out your plan of care, providing necessary recommendations, and any other skills required based on your job description.
