Requesting a Letter of Recommendation

4/25/2012

The letter of recommendation is an important component in the process of applying to graduate schools.  So it is important to take into consideration, possible individuals that you would like to write reference letters for you.  Do not wait until the last minute because you need to provide these individuals with enough time to write the letter.
  • Consider scheduling an appointment with he/she when their schedule is free to discuss information that is needed in the reference letter.
  • Below there is a form that I used when I was requesting reference letters.  This helps for you to get organized and to have different components that could be included in your reference letter.  You can include other areas on your form, these were the areas that I used.
  • Have the application due date to provide to the individual writing your reference letter.
  • Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute to Request Reference Letters

Below is a great handout from Seattle Pacific University entitled:
RECOMMENDATION LETTER ETIQUETTE:  Guidelines for Requesting a Faculty Reference  http://www.spu.edu/depts/eng/documents/RECOMMENDATIONLETTEREtiquette.pdf

Unus Tactus App

Ashley Alliano is a speech language pathology graduate student at Seton Hall University.  She developed and recently released an app called Unus Tactus. It is intended to be used by people of all ages with mild cognitive or motor deficits in order to allow them to have easy access to use their cell phone with GPS features.

The I-phone is turned into a one touch dialer by using large pictures as a visual to dial the corresponding individual’s phone number.

 Help Button
This button allows for easy access to an emergency number (i.e. hospital, family member) in order to contact that individual.  A phone call is placed to the contact phone number, in addition to an email sent to the individual’s emergency email address.  A Google Map link is attached to show the user’s exact location

This feature allows the user to notify their emergency contact person whey they have left a designated radius of a given location.  When the alert is triggered, an email is sent to the user’s emergency contact including Google Maps link to the user’s exact location.
