Feeling Overwhelmed? Does the Work Seem Like it Keeps Piling Up?

Feeling overwhelmed is normal and you are not the only one.  Often times it helps when you are going through different roadblocks in life to know you are not alone.  One of the many challenges in undergrad and grad school  that I experienced was to maintain a certain balance so that I would not feel overwhelmed.  Many times it  felt like the work was coming in faster and faster and I became overwhelmed.  I would get discouraged at times and think, "Am I the only one feeling overwhelmed" and I would even doubt myself and say, "Maybe this is not the major for me."  These are common feelings and sayings that would come up a lot of times when I began college and graduate school.
The important tip that I had to remember sometimes when I was feeling overwhelmed was to step back, put together a plan of how I planned to attack the assignments or whatever task that needed to be completed and then I would attack each item accordingly.  It helps for me to write everything down, write on a calendar and set deadlines for myself and stick to the deadlines.  Continue to push forward each day and just know that the end result is worth it and always remember, "At the center of all the chaos there is a star and that star is you"

What are some tips that help you not to become too overwhelmed?

NeuroScience for Kids is a website that explores the nervous system.  I know the name may sound like this website can only be used as a resource for kids, but I think it is great for all ages.  The reason why I like this website is because of all the information, animations, audio and visuals that correspond with each subtopic related to the nervous system.  NeuroScience for Kids breaks down information in a way that makes learning about the nervous system fun and engaging.

Special Thanks to NeuroScience for Kids for creating an engaging website for the nervous system!

Let me know how the website for this week helped you.

"Discovering the Missing Pieces to the Puzzle"

As a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)  it is important to look at the "bigger picture."  Each case that a SLP receives should be viewed as an unique puzzle.  When a person puts together a puzzle typically you dump out your puzzle pieces, spread them out,  and you may even look at the box to see the complete picture.
Next, the corner pieces are typically arranged because those are easier to identify and it creates the framework.  Then the fun begins, twisting and turning pieces, linking pieces by colors, shapes, pictures,  to finish the puzzle.  You will reach a point in the puzzle where you may say, "Wow this puzzle is almost finished," and it will make you want to work even harder.  As you near the end and you insert the last piece to the puzzle, you will feel accomplished and will want to work on more and more puzzles and challenge yourself with harder ones.
All the above describes the life of a Speech Language Pathologist, a SLP is provided with a variety of different cases and the process is just like solving a puzzle with missing pieces.  The SLP gathers all information pertinent to the case and then starts to try different therapy ideas to see what works and what does not work.  Some cases are similar and may be easier to solve because you may have had
a previous case that required the same techniques, but each case is still unique.  The thinking that a SLP experiences when a skill is reached, a goal is met, or a parent/guardian comes to you and tells you how much they appreciate what you are doing; all these things make a SLP want to continue to discover the missing pieces to the puzzle.

Movie Theme

9/22/2010

PowerPoint Games was the website of the week for September 20, 2010.  During graduate school in the clinic setting, we had a wonderful group of young adults with Down syndrome.  For three weeks, a movie theme was incorporated into therapy sessions, it was sooo much fun and very functional!!!!  Some of the activities incorporated were:
  1. A PowerPoint from  https://www.jc-schools.net/ divisionID=15672&departmentID=16520&Subdepartmentid=7612 was modified to include movie related questions to correspond with our theme.
  2. Telephone Script to use when asking a friend to go to the movies
  3. Ticket Booth and Concession Stand was set up in the room:  Each person was able to switch roles to be at each station
  4. Newspaper/Internet to find out information (i.e. movie theater, movie listings)  about the movies playing.
Some of the materials that we used are listed below, we also used movie ticket stubs, different snacks to include at our concession stand with prices and paper money that looked real :)...We had a ball sooo many skills were targeted: WH questions, social skills, dealing with money and many other skills.  They really enjoyed all the activities!
Were you able to incorporate a movie theme in your lesson plan, let me know your experience.
